Identify which cable is short, measure the working route and keep a usable supplied lead. A longer host cable is a different purchase from a display cable or an extension.

The short answer
Recommendations based on documented features and fit, without hands-on performance testing.
Name the short connection before buying a longer cable
There are two different desk routes: computer to dock, and dock to screen. Moving the dock changes both. A longer monitor lead does not extend a short host lead, and a new host cable does not create another screen output.
Keep a working supplied cable when it already reaches. First try a supported dock position that leaves its ports accessible and its power supply and attached leads usable. We have not tested the cable or desk combinations described here.
Two cables, two different distances
HOST ROUTEComputer → dock
Use the dock’s labeled host socket and a documented compatible lead.
DISPLAY ROUTEDock → screen
Verify the HDMI/DisplayPort route separately. Changing one distance does not extend the other.
POWER ROUTEWall → dock supply
Keep the required supply. Cable capability does not set actual laptop power.

Measure the actual working route
Trace the cable through the intended desk layout, including the stand, rear of the dock and the laptop’s normal connection/removal position. Use your own movement allowance; a straight line across an empty desk is not the whole route.
For an illustrative measured path of 1.4 m, a 1 m cable is too short. A 2 m cable leaves 0.6 m before whatever movement and routing allowance your setup needs. That subtraction is a planning example, not a certified bend allowance or a fit test.

What is short?
Investigate this first
Computer → detachable dock host connection
Keep/reposition the dock, or verify a longer host cable.
Dock → HDMI/DisplayPort screen
Plan the exact display cable and screen mode separately.
Permanently attached hub lead
Do not buy a male-to-male host cable as a replacement for a fixed lead.
Dock power-supply route
Follow the supply instructions; a longer data cable does not extend the AC lead.
A conditional 2 m Thunderbolt option
Plugable lists TBT4-40G2M as an active 2 m Thunderbolt4/USB4 cable with up to 40 Gbps data and 100 W (20 V/5 A) power capability. The selected package is one cable. It is not the nearby 1 m/240 W model or a female-ended extension.
Check the dock’s permitted replacement cable, the actual host port and required functions before ordering. The cable’s ceiling is not delivered laptop power or measured throughput. It cannot increase the host’s supported display count. A requirement above 100 W needs another explicitly supported plan.
Read the dock maker’s length policy
Plugable’s October20,2026 guidance names this cable for host routes up to 2 m and says it does not support extensions or repeaters with its products. Treat that as Plugable’s support boundary, rather than a universal rule for every Thunderbolt device.
For another brand’s dock, check that manufacturer’s cable guidance. A Thunderbolt badge or matching plug is not our test of your complete host, dock and screen combination. Keep ordinary USB-C-only docking requirements separate instead of transferring this Thunderbolt route automatically.
Moving the dock may be the smaller purchase
Compare two paper plans before ordering. In one, the dock stays near the laptop and the existing display/peripheral leads reach the desk equipment. In the other, the dock stays by the screen and a verified longer host lead reaches the laptop. Include every connection and the supply in both plans.
Keep whichever arrangement already meets the requirement. If a longer host cable solves the missing distance, buy one supported lead; avoid an extra extension or duplicate cable pack. Reserve somewhere for unused length without pulling the connectors during normal desk movement.
Finish the basket check
Record five items: exact host port, exact dock and host socket, required data/video functions, required power and measured route. Resolve any blank before treating this model as the missing part. The linked guide below separates charging-only cables from video/data cables.
This is a specification-based cable choice. No transfer-speed, charging, reliability, noise or display-count improvement is measured here. Confirm the selected model and package on the current listing.

Plugable Thunderbolt host-cable length policy — updated October20,2026 ↗Plugable describes replacement host cables up to2m and names TBT4-40G2M; it does not support extensions/repeaters with its products and only guarantees its own cables. This is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a universal Thunderbolt length law or a guarantee for another brand’s dock.
