Longer HDMI cable or move the dock? Measure the display route

Keep a working HDMI connection. If the screen lead is too short, compare a direct replacement with moving the dock—without confusing it with the computer’s host cable.

StarTech HDMI2-CABLE-4K60-10F (Black, 10 ft / 3 m)

For a longer full-size HDMI display connection

Compare the 10 ft / 3 m StarTech lead when both endpoints support the intended mode and the measured route fits. Keep a working lead that already reaches.

Skip it if: You need 4K120, USB-C/DisplayPort conversion, a longer computer-to-dock lead or an unverified extension chain.

Quick answer: identify the short lead

If the dock already connects correctly and only the monitor lead is short, compare a longer display cable before replacing the dock. Moving the dock may work too, but then recheck the computer lead, power supply and every attached accessory.

The selected HDMI cable changes the dock-to-screen or computer-to-screen distance. It does not extend a Thunderbolt host lead, add a video output or charge the laptop. This is specification-based buying guidance; we have not tested these combinations.

Which distance are you changing?

HOST LEADComputer → dock

A longer HDMI cable does not extend this connection.

DISPLAY LEADHDMI output → HDMI screen

Match the complete screen mode and the actual routed distance.

Trace the route in the working setup

Measure between the actual output and screen input, following the intended cable path. Include the screen’s normal movement, cable exits and an accessible way to disconnect it. Choose your own routing allowance; do not buy from the straight-line distance alone.

In an illustrative 2.2 m routed path, a nominal 3 m lead leaves 0.8 m before your movement allowance. That arithmetic is not a certified bend allowance or a guarantee that a connector clears a wall. Leave plugs accessible and follow the equipment instructions.

Match the screen mode before the length

Write down resolution, refresh rate and any required HDR or other mode details. Check the exact output, any intermediate adapter and the monitor input. A cable marketed for a higher mode cannot raise an endpoint’s limit.

HDMI’s official names and certification labels are more useful than the word 4K alone. Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed describe different capability classes; the current overview also includes Ultra96. Buy for the verified job instead of assuming the largest number is necessary.

Where the selected 10 ft lead fits

StarTech identifies HDMI2-CABLE-4K60-10F as a black passive cable with full-size HDMI ends, an 18 Gbps ceiling and up-to-4K60 support with suitable endpoints. The package is one cable. The selected model is not the older HDMM3M or a different regional/length suffix.

For 4K120 or a different connector, compare another verified route. A working 4K30 hub output does not become 4K60 through this cable. If an active or optical lead is needed for another distance, check its source/display markings and installation instructions rather than treating the two ends as interchangeable.

Replace one lead or relocate the dock?

Compare the complete cost and inconvenience of each plan. A longer display lead may leave a convenient laptop connection untouched. Moving the dock may use the cable you own, but create short power, keyboard or storage connections elsewhere.

Prefer a single documented replacement route over assuming a coupler and several spare leads retain the desired mode. The connector shape does not validate an extension chain. No universal maximum HDMI distance or untested chain performance is claimed here.

Keep this note beside the order

Record the exact output and input, required display mode, measured route with movement, selected model/length and any conversion direction. Confirm the actual package before ordering. Keep an already adequate cable; buy only the missing reach or capability.

Evidence and limits

  • HDMI Licensing Administrator cable-type overview ↗Official cable categories and certification identifiers distinguish High Speed, Premium High Speed, Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 capabilities. A cable label does not add an unsupported endpoint mode.
  • Club3D direction and active-optical explanation ↗Explains directional conversion and active-optical source/destination plugs. This supports a separate direction check for those routes, not a recommendation or tested fit for an unregistered optical cable.
  • CalDigit TS4 connection layout ↗The computer connection, display outputs and dock power are separate physical routes. No independently tested pairing with the selected HDMI lead is claimed.

StarTech HDMI2-CABLE-4K60-10F (Black, 10 ft / 3 m)

One passive full-size HDMI-to-HDMI cable for a longer display route.

Check the fit: Check full-size HDMI at both ends, actual routed length and the complete display mode. This 18Gbps model is not a 4K120 cable; a new lead cannot exceed the computer, dock or screen limit.
