DisplayPort to HDMI: choose the direction before the adapter

Keep matching direct connections. For mismatched ports, identify the source, screen input and required video mode before comparing an active adapter.

Plugable DP-HDMI active adapter (DisplayPort output → HDMI screen)

For a verified full-size DisplayPort output and HDMI screen: DP-HDMI

An active adapter to investigate for an SDR screen up to the documented 4K/60 Hz ceiling. Keep a suitable HDMI lead.

Skip it if: You need HDR, the reverse direction, USB-C or Mini DisplayPort input, or the exact computer/dock and display mode remain unresolved.

Keep a direct connection that already works

If your computer or dock and screen already have matching HDMI or DisplayPort connections at the mode you need, keep that route. An adapter is useful when it solves a specific port mismatch; adding one does not improve a working picture.

Write the route from the computer toward the screen. For example, a dock with a DisplayPort output feeding a monitor's HDMI input is a different purchase from an HDMI laptop feeding a DisplayPort monitor. We have not tested the combinations in this guide.

Follow the video toward the screen

1 · SOURCEFull-size DisplayPort output

Computer or dock. Verify the supported video mode and adapter requirement.

2 · ONE-WAY CONVERSIONDP → HDMI

Selected DP-HDMI: active conversion, SDR shortlist. It does not work backward.

3 · SCREENSeparate HDMI lead → HDMI input

Match the screen mode and the model’s cable guidance.

Choose the direction and connector first

The input side of the selected DP-HDMI adapter takes a full-size DisplayPort source. Its HDMI socket connects onward to the screen using a separate HDMI lead. Do not choose it for a laptop's HDMI output, a USB-C socket or Mini DisplayPort.

Identify the actual output and input
Your routeUseful next step
HDMI output → HDMI input, or DP → DPKeep the supported direct cable.
Full-size DP output → HDMI inputCheck the exact active/passive requirement and video mode.
HDMI output → DP inputInvestigate a converter explicitly documented for this reverse route. DP-HDMI does not work backward.
USB-C or Mini DisplayPort → HDMIChoose the documented connector-specific route; this full-size DP plug does not fit.

When active conversion is the requirement

Passive adapters rely on the source providing a compatible DP++ signal. Active designs perform conversion in the adapter. Follow the exact computer or dock instructions instead of assuming that any adapter with the right plug is suitable.

For example, CalDigit requires an active adapter for an HDMI screen through the TS4's DisplayPort output. That establishes the adapter format, not a tested TS4/DP-HDMI pairing. Verify the selected combination and screen mode separately.

A conditional SDR option, with clear exclusions

Plugable lists DP-HDMI for up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz SDR. That ceiling depends on the source, screen and cable. Its page contains conflicting HDR wording, so this shortlist excludes HDR requirements. A 4K label alone is insufficient.

Check Plugable's current host restrictions: some OEM docking stations can have detection issues, and older Intel HD 4000/5000 systems are excluded or restricted. Resolve those cases with the manufacturer before ordering.

  • Confirm the exact output, GPU/dock support and required refresh rate.
  • For this adapter's 4K60 route, Plugable recommends a suitable HDMI lead no longer than 6 ft/2 m. This is model guidance, not a universal HDMI distance limit.
  • The adapter is one unit; the HDMI lead is separate. Keep an existing suitable lead rather than buying a duplicate.

Make the whole basket work on the desk

Place the adapter near its source and measure the real path to the monitor. Allow space behind the dock or computer for both connectors and an unforced cable bend. Check that the monitor input is accessible and the desk can move through its usual positions.

List what you already own: screen, suitable HDMI lead and working laptop power route. This adapter converts a video connection; it is not a laptop charger or a promise of an additional independent screen. The host's display limits still apply.

Resolve the unknowns before buying

Use the display-adapter branch of our upgrade finder to separate matching ports, a verified SDR route and cases that need more investigation. Only the verified full-size DP-to-HDMI SDR choice produces this model's purchase link.

If HDR, a reverse direction or OEM compatibility is unresolved, keep the current setup until a manufacturer-supported route is clear. No price, stock, image-quality score or hands-on reliability result is claimed here.

Evidence and limits

This is a specification-based buying guide. Product descriptions come from the sources below; the fit examples and decision rules are our editorial analysis. We have not measured durability, performance, or comfort in a product test.

Read 4 primary sources and claim notes
  • Plugable DP-HDMI exact active adapter ↗Exact SKU, one-way full-size DisplayPort source to HDMI display, active conversion, up to 4K60 SDR, required separate HDMI cable and model-specific cable/host restrictions. HDR statements on this page conflict; this guide excludes HDR use rather than treating a generic claim as verified.
  • Plugable DisplayPort-to-HDMI active and passive families ↗Passive adapters depend on DP++ output; active adapters perform conversion. Direction is DisplayPort source to HDMI display, not the reverse. Category-level HDR marketing is not transferred to the selected SKU.
  • CalDigit TS4 display adapter requirements ↗An HDMI display through TS4 DisplayPort requires an active adapter; a supported USB-C-to-HDMI adapter on a spare Thunderbolt port is another format. Ordinary USB-C data sockets are not video outputs. This does not certify the selected Plugable pairing.
  • VESA DisplayPort frequently asked questions ↗DisplayPort sources can supply power to and detect external display adapters. A connector/version label alone does not verify a complete source-adapter-display mode.

Plugable DP-HDMI active adapter (DisplayPort output → HDMI screen)

An active, one-way full-size DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter for a verified SDR display route.

Check the fit: SDR only for this shortlist; HDR evidence conflicts. Not HDMI-to-DP, USB-C or Mini DP. Verify source/GPU, screen mode and OEM-dock restrictions. HDMI cable is not included.
